Roy Weatherby built his company on one idea: velocity kills cleanly. Introduced in 1943, the .270 Weatherby Magnum was his answer to the already-excellent .270 Winchester — more powder, more powder capacity, more velocity. The result is a cartridge that, when handloaded with care, will push a 130-grain bullet at 3,300–3,400 fps from a 26-inch barrel, outpacing the standard .270 Win by 400–500 fps.

In the high desert and open rimrock country of eastern Oregon — where shots at pronghorn and mule deer at 400+ yards are routine — that extra velocity is real insurance. Here's how to reload it right.

Case Basics

The .270 Weatherby Magnum uses Weatherby's signature double-radius shoulder — a freebore-heavy design that reduces pressure spike on ignition and allows the use of faster powders at higher charges. Brass is available from Weatherby (the standard) and from Norma (preferred by many handloaders for consistency and longevity).

Expect 5–7 loadings from Norma brass with proper prep. Weatherby brass is slightly softer and tends to run 4–5 loadings before primer pockets loosen.

Case Prep

  • Full-length resize after every firing (the freebore design means more case stretch than standard belted magnums)
  • Trim to 2.540 inches — check every loading; this case grows
  • Primer pocket uniforming: highly recommended for Norma brass; nearly mandatory for Weatherby brass by the 3rd firing
  • Flash hole deburring: once, on new brass
  • Anneal every 2–3 firings to maintain neck tension consistency

Primers

Large rifle magnum primers are standard. Federal 215M (Gold Medal Match) and CCI 250 are the go-to choices. The 215M produces slightly more consistent ignition with the large powder charges this cartridge requires. If you're working near max loads, do not substitute standard large rifle primers — pressure spikes are real with this much powder.

Powder Selection

The .270 Weatherby Magnum has a large case capacity — approximately 82–85 grains of water — and performs best with slow-burning powders that fill the case efficiently. You want a powder that doesn't leave a lot of empty airspace, which can cause inconsistent ignition and pressure variance.

Top Powder Choices

  • Hodgdon Retumbo: The gold standard for this cartridge. Meters well, fills the case properly, produces consistent velocity near max. Start at 75.0 gr, work toward 79.0–81.0 gr (check your manual).
  • IMR 7828 SSC: Excellent accuracy potential. Slightly faster than Retumbo, requires careful charge management at top loads. Good choice if Retumbo is unavailable.
  • Alliant Reloder 25: Outstanding with heavier bullets (140–150 gr). Less ideal with 130s but worth testing if accuracy is the priority over top velocity.
  • Hodgdon H1000: Solid accuracy, slightly less peak velocity than Retumbo but excellent consistency across temperature ranges — a real advantage if you're hunting Oregon's high desert in late October when morning temps can drop 40°F from midday.

Bullet Selection

130-Grain — The Classic Choice

The .270 Weatherby earns its reputation with 130-grain bullets at screaming velocity. For deer and pronghorn, the Nosler AccuBond 130 gr and Hornady ELD-X 130 gr are both excellent. The AccuBond is slightly tougher on near-range hits; the ELD-X has a higher BC (.486 vs .448) and retains more velocity at extended range.

Top load example (verify in your manual): Retumbo, 79.5 gr, Nosler AccuBond 130 gr, COAL 3.350 in, Federal 215M — expect 3,340–3,380 fps from a 26-inch barrel. A 200-yard zero gives you a dead-on hold to 270 yards; at 400 yards the drop is only 14 inches — manageable with a dialed scope.

150-Grain — For Elk

If you're running a .270 Weatherby for elk, step up to a 150-grain controlled-expansion bullet. The Swift A-Frame 150 gr or Nosler Partition 150 gr will hold together on heavy bone and penetrate deep on quartering shots. Velocity drops to 3,050–3,150 fps, but energy on target at 300 yards still exceeds 2,800 ft-lbs — more than enough for any elk in Oregon.

140-Grain — The Middle Ground

The Berger Hybrid Hunter 140 gr (BC .509) is worth serious consideration if you're hunting pronghorn or mule deer where 400+ yard shots are expected. The high BC minimizes wind drift, and at .270 Weatherby velocities, it arrives with devastating terminal energy at long range.

Load Development Process

The .270 Weatherby's freebore design means you'll have more jump-to-lands than you're used to with standard cartridges. Don't obsess over seating depth — Weatherby's freebore was designed to work with a specific range of COAL. Follow your bullet manufacturer's recommended seating depth (usually 3.290–3.360 inches depending on bullet and rifle) and focus on powder charge as your primary accuracy variable.

  1. Start 10% below max charge
  2. Develop in 1.0 gr increments, 3 rounds per charge level
  3. Look for the node: consistent velocity ES under 15 fps and SD under 8 fps at peak accuracy
  4. Once the node is identified, shoot a 5-shot group for confirmation
  5. Document your cold bore POI vs. warm barrel — the Weatherby Magnum generates enough heat that POI can shift 1 MOA between a cold first shot and shots 4–5

What to Watch For

  • Pressure signs: Sticky bolt lift, flattened primers, and cratering are your warnings. The .270 Weatherby Magnum generates 62,000 PSI at max — this is not a cartridge to push past book maximums.
  • Barrel heat: This cartridge is hard on barrels. Let it cool between groups during development. Hunting use (3–5 rounds per day) is fine; bench sessions of 30 rounds are not.
  • Velocity consistency: Use a chronograph. With Retumbo and a quality primer, ES under 15 fps is achievable and expected. If you're seeing ES of 30+ fps, something is wrong — inconsistent seating depth, primer issues, or powder charge variation.

Oregon Application

The .270 Weatherby Magnum is overkill for timber hunting and perfectly suited for eastern Oregon's open-country big game. Pronghorn in the Hart Mountain unit, mule deer in the Silvies or Steens areas, and even early-season elk across eastern Oregon's high desert are all fair game for a properly handloaded .270 Weatherby.

The cartridge's real advantage is wind. At 3,350 fps with a 140 gr Berger Hybrid, wind drift at 400 yards in a 10 mph crosswind is just 6.5 inches — significantly less than a standard .270 Win pushing the same bullet. In the high desert, where afternoon thermals and unpredictable gusts are constant, that margin matters.

Roy Weatherby knew what he was doing. Load it carefully, verify your data at the range, and this cartridge will reach farther and hit harder than almost anything else a deer and elk hunter in Oregon's open country will ever need.
