Winchester introduced the .243 in 1955 by necking down the .308 Winchester case to .243 caliber, and in the seven decades since, it's become one of the most beloved versatile cartridges in North America. Run a light 55–75 grain bullet and it's a flat-shooting varmint hammer. Step up to a 90–105 grain projectile and it's a capable deer and pronghorn cartridge out to 400 yards. Few rounds span that range this effectively, and few are as pleasant to handload.
The Case: Starting With Good Brass
The .243 Win runs on a standard .308 family parent case — rimless, bottlenecked, with a 0.473" case head. This is excellent news for reloaders because brass supply is consistent and quality options abound. For precision work, Lapua .243 Win brass is the gold standard: uniform case weights, consistent primer pockets, and impressive longevity. Norma and Nosler brass are also excellent. Federal and Winchester factory brass works well and is often available for free via your shot-out factory ammo.
Brass Prep Protocol
- Full-length size on first firing with new brass (neck size only thereafter for bolt guns)
- Trim to 2.035" — the maximum case length is 2.045", trim-to length is 2.035"
- Deburr and chamfer case mouths, uniform primer pockets
- Weigh sorted batches — keep cases within 2 grains for best consistency
- Anneal every 3–4 firings to prevent case mouth cracking, especially in hot varmint loads
Primer Selection
The .243 Winchester uses a standard large rifle primer. For most loads, Federal 210M (Match) primers deliver excellent consistency and low SD (standard deviation). CCI BR-2 Benchrest primers are also excellent for precision work. For magnum powder charges (slower powders like H4831SC), some reloaders prefer CCI 200 for slightly more reliable ignition. Avoid magnum primers in standard loads — they can elevate pressure unpredictably.
Powder Selection: The Critical Variable
This is where the .243 really shines — it's not finicky about powder selection, and several excellent powders occupy its sweet spot.
For Varmint Loads (55–75 gr)
- Varget (IMR/Hodgdon): Excellent with 55–70 gr bullets. Temperature-stable, meters well, consistently delivers sub-MOA performance in quality barrels.
- H4895: A classic .243 powder. Slightly faster than Varget, excellent with 58–70 gr bullets. Very forgiving across a wide charge range.
- IMR 4064: Similar burn rate to H4895, excellent accuracy potential with light bullets.
For Deer/Big Game Loads (90–105 gr)
- H4831SC (Short Cut): The go-to powder for heavy .243 bullets. Meters exceptionally well, temperature stable, and delivers outstanding velocities with 95–105 gr bullets.
- RL-22 (Alliant Reloder 22): Excellent for heavy .243 loads, particularly with 100 gr Partition and 105 gr ABLR bullets. Slightly more velocity than H4831SC in some barrels.
- IMR 4831: Traditional choice that pairs well with 85–100 gr bullets. Widely available and consistent lot-to-lot.
- Superformance (Hodgdon): Temperature-sensitive but delivers impressive velocities — best for handloaders who track ambient temp and adjust.

Seating Depth: Finding the Accuracy Node
Most .243 rifles respond well to bullets seated 0.015"–0.040" off the lands. Use a Hornady OAL gauge and a modified case to find your rifle's actual chamber dimensions, then experiment in 0.010" increments. Many shooters find their tightest groups at 0.020" off the lands, but this varies significantly by barrel and bullet combination. Don't assume — measure your rifle.
Velocity Expectations and Terminal Performance
A properly loaded 100 gr .243 factory-equivalent handload leaves the muzzle at approximately 2,960–3,050 fps, retaining around 2,550 fps at 200 yards and 2,170 fps at 350 yards — well above the minimum expansion threshold for most hunting bullets. Wind drift at 300 yards with a 10 mph crosswind is approximately 4.5–5.5 inches depending on BC. Know your load's numbers before you go afield.
